The Rhodes Quality Winelands Cycle Race is attracting cyclists from across the Western Cape as registration spots fill rapidly for the 25 January event hosted at Wellington’s Huguenot Primary School.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Riebeek and Paardeberg regions, the professionally timed race offers two distinct challenges for cycling enthusiasts of all levels.
Serious cyclists can tackle the demanding 102 km route, starting at 06:00 from General Hertzog Boulevard. This longer course serves as official seeding preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2026, winding through scenic vineyards and wheatfields across Hermon and Riebeek West.
For families and recreational riders, the 52 km option provides a more accessible adventure through Voor Paardeberg’s stunning countryside, with both routes departing from the school grounds.
The Pedal Power Association has sanctioned both races, with professional timing provided by Finish Time to ensure accurate results.
Early bird registration closes Monday, 19 January at 17:00 sharp. Entry fees for the 102 km race are R480 for adults and R430 for students aged 16-17, while the 52 km route costs R360 for adults and R320 for students.
Late registration remains available until 22 January at collection points nationwide, though fees increase to R550 for the longer route and R430 for the shorter distance.
Organisers have capped total participation at 2,500 riders across both categories to maintain the event’s quality and safety standards.
All race proceeds benefit Paarl Rotary’s community charity projects, supporting various local initiatives through cycling fundraising efforts.
Post-race celebrations feature diverse food and beverage stalls at the finish line, with organizers providing medals, lucky draw prizes, and secure bike parking facilities for all participants.
Wellington’s rural setting offers ideal training terrain for competitive cyclists, with the course featuring diverse landscapes including rolling hills and flat valley sections. The January timing takes advantage of perfect weather conditions for endurance sports.
Cyclists can access route maps and complete registration at www.winelandscyclerace.co.za, with the Cape Town Cycle Tour providing official online registration and seeding services.
The event combines competitive cycling with the region’s natural beauty, creating an experience that attracts participants seeking both athletic challenge and scenic adventure in the heart of South Africa’s wine country.
