Cape Town International Airport has reached a significant milestone, welcoming over one million passengers in October 2025 – a traffic level typically reserved for the busy December holiday period. The early achievement signals an exceptionally strong start to the peak travel season and underscores the airport’s remarkable growth trajectory.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) announced the milestone with considerable pride, highlighting it as evidence of the trust travellers place in South African airports and the dedication of operational teams across the facility.

“This accomplishment, usually seen only during the busy December period, signals an early and strong start to the peak travel season,” said Thabo Phateng, acting Regional General Manager for Cape Town International Airport. Phateng said that as the festive season approaches, the focus remains steadfastly on delivering efficient, safe, and welcoming airport services..

This latest milestone builds on Cape Town International Airport’s exceptional 2024 performance, when the facility processed over 10 million passengers – a 7% increase from 2023. International passenger traffic proved particularly strong, reaching a record-breaking 3 million two-way travellers, representing an 18% rise above pre-pandemic levels.

The growth momentum continued into 2025, with early-year data showing an 8% increase in domestic travel and a 5% boost in international arrivals. Cargo operations have also surged dramatically, with volumes jumping 25% in 2024 to 75,000 tonnes, followed by an impressive 56% rise in the first half of 2025.

The milestone achievement highlights ACSA’s continued investments in infrastructure, technology, and service quality. Strong collaboration among airport partners, airlines, ground handlers, and Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) has been crucial in ensuring smooth operations during this high-demand period.

Looking ahead, Cape Town International Airport is preparing for transformational change. ACSA has earmarked approximately R21.7 billion for a major infrastructure development project scheduled to begin in 2026 and continue through 2029. The extensive upgrade will include a new runway to increase aircraft capacity by about 50%, expanded domestic and international terminals, enhanced security systems, and improved passenger processing facilities.

The success of Cape Town International Airport has been significantly bolstered by the Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) public-private partnership, which has expanded connectivity with 33 new international routes since 2015. This strategic initiative has contributed to an 80% increase in two-way passenger traffic over that period, firmly establishing Cape Town as a key regional aviation hub.

For the 2025/26 IATA winter season, international seat capacity is projected to increase by 11%, reaching 38% above 2019 levels – a clear indicator of the airport’s continued appeal to international carriers and travellers alike.

Despite operating at capacity during peak times, ACSA’s teams remain dedicated to providing a safe, efficient, and positive experience for all travellers. The airport authority expressed gratitude to all partners and passengers for their cooperation as Cape Town International Airport manages increased volumes with its current facilities.

“Even while operating at capacity during peak times, the teams remain dedicated to providing a safe, efficient, and positive experience for all travellers,” ACSA stated.

With peak season now underway, Cape Town International Airport continues to work closely with airline partners, border authorities, and service providers to maintain the highest levels of safety, comfort, and hospitality throughout the season.
