A pupil at the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Constantia allegedly attempted to harm himself on Thursday, 23 October. Staff quickly moved learners to the school hall to ensure their safety.
The school sent a letter to parents and pupils, saying the incident “had the potential to cause distress within our school community but was successfully averted.” Staff confirmed that the learner is safe and receiving care and support.
Learners witnessed the event
Classes were briefly disrupted. Teachers moved pupils away from the area.
A senior learner said many classmates saw the incident happen.
“Lots of pupils were crying and our class could see the area where it happened,” said one pupil, who asked to remain anonymous.
Parents express concern
A mother of a pupil said the incident left families anxious.
“I was concerned when I heard about this, because there have been so many stories in the media lately about pupils acting out. As a parent I worry about the kind of pressures high-school pupils are experiencing. My daughter was very upset,” she said.
She said the school acted with care and responsibility.
“I think the school was reassuring. It communicates well with parents. I do not think it is to blame for the boy’s mental-health problems. According to my daughter, the school knew he was receiving counselling and treatment.”
School urges support and awareness
In its letter, the school called on parents to check in with their children, be aware of their needs, and contact the school’s counselling team if support is needed.
“Mental health is vital to all of us. Please take a moment to check in with your children,” the school said.
