KIMBERLEY – A pioneer and activist for the rights of persons with disabilities, Dorothy-Anne Howitson, passed away on the afternoon of Monday, 20 October, two days before her 70th birthday.

Howitson, who contracted polio when she was a child, was also an advocate for eradicating polio through vaccination.

“As a polio survivor, I cannot bear to think that anyone should get this preventable virus which changes your life forever,” Howitson used to say. For most of her life, she was dependent on a wheelchair, and a few years ago she was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome.

Howitson was an active member of society, serving with organisations including Rotary International, and until recently she was the secretary of the Association of and for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Frances Baard District.

On Facebook, Sharon Steyn, on behalf of the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nocci), wrote: “Dorothy stood for what she believed in; she fought for the rights of people with disabilities, she gave to people with disabilities and was always thinking of ways to make a difference. A true legend, and a great loss to Kimberley.”

Dorothy touched many lives with her courage, friendliness, and the way she always made people feel welcome and valued. Kimberley has lost a very special person. Rest in peace, Dorothy. Your strength and kindness will never be forgotten.”
