TymeBank has become the latest South African bank to join a groundbreaking government initiative, partnering with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to deliver Smart ID and passport services directly to citizens nationwide.
The digital bank joins seven other financial institutions already participating in the Department’s ambitious digital transformation programme, which aims to bring essential government services closer to South Africans, particularly those in remote and underserved communities.
Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Leon Schreiber confirmed that TymeBank’s participation expands the reach of what he described as “the most pro-poor and inclusive reform Home Affairs has implemented in its existence.”
“As one of eight banks in South Africa participating in our digital partnership, TymeBank will help us to further accelerate on our journey towards achieving our vision of Home Affairs at home,” Dr. Schreiber said.
The partnership will enable TymeBank’s more than 11 million customers to access DHA services through the bank’s network, leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure secure and efficient service delivery.
Technology driven service delivery
Karl Westvig, CEO of TymeBank, described the collaboration as a natural fit between two digitally-focused organisations committed to using technology to serve South Africans.
“TymeBank’s mission has always been to expand banking using an innovative, secure and technology-driven model that offers simple, accessible, and affordable products to all South Africans,” Westvig said. “We are proud to bring that same secure digital capability to support Home Affairs in delivering trusted, citizen-focused services.”
The initiative represents a significant step in South Africa’s digital government services evolution, with the Minister emphasising the country’s leadership position in digital financial services.
TymeBank will implement the service through a structured rollout, beginning with a comprehensive test-and-learn phase at its Johannesburg headquarters before expanding to locations nationwide.
