PAARL – After four years of planning and construction, Be Part Research has officially opened its new, state-of-the-art facility in Mbekweni, Paarl—marking a major milestone for global health research in South Africa.
Founded in 2006, Be Part began as a grassroots initiative focused on empowering women through HIV prevention research. Despite early challenges and the impact of the 2009–2010 financial crisis, the organization restructured and evolved into a thriving hub for internationally sponsored studies.
Today, Be Part conducts cutting-edge research on TB vaccines, HIV therapies, infectious diseases, and treatments for lifestyle-related and rare illnesses. Its work has earned recognition from global health leaders such as the Gates Foundation, Gilead and Merck.
The launch brought together funders, health and social support partners and the building team—each instrumental in bringing the vision to life. Guests were welcomed with a performance by the community youth choir, Ingomsolethu, which is supported by Be Part Yoluntu Centre NPC, the organization’s sister company.
Dr Lize Hellström-Louw, executive member and long-time champion of the Mbekweni community, reflected on the journey:
“There’s a saying from Sierra Leone: Wan han noh de tai bohndul — a bundle cannot be fastened with one hand. This truth lives in the heart of our team. The Be Part family, now 42 strong, has helped us grow into a respected research centre, especially in adolescent health. Their dedication, adaptability and spirit are the foundation of our success.”
Dr Hellström-Louw emphasised that the new facility is more than a building: “It’s a promise to our community and to the future of health research.”
