A woman died in a fatal accident on the N1 near Rawsonville last night (May 24) when her BMW collided head-on with a truck.
According to Nico Haremse founder of the Breedevallei Farm Watch, the accident occurred close to the weighbridge just after 20:00.
Harmse said that with their arrival on the scene the driver of the BMW had already passed away.
A tow-truck driver from a Worcester towing company who was on the scene, said that the motorist drove into oncoming traffic and then collided with the truck.
He further explained that the truck was driving in the direction of Cape Town and the motorist in the direction of Worcester.
According to the driver of the truck who spoke to the tow-truck driver, he tried to warn the driver of the car of the danger by flashing his lights at her while trying to edge off the road. He however could not avoid the collision.
The motorist was declared dead on the scene, but the truck driver suffered no injuries. He was however severely shocked and traumatized.
When the emergency services arrived, the paramedics had to cut the vehicle open to remove the driver from the wreck of the BMW.
Sergeant Vivienne Hurling-Jordaan, spokesperson for the Rawsonville police confirmed the incident to the Standardand said that a charge of culpable homicide is being investigated.
At present, the identity of the motorist cannot be disclosed, because her body has not yet been identified.
