This coming Saturday (11 February) all roads will lead to Esselen Park Stadium in Worcester, where Sporting Stars FC Soccer Club in partnership with Buco Worcester will host the inaugural Sporting Stars/Buco Cup of Love women’s soccer tournament.
Its main purpose is to give women’s soccer a platform where they can showcase their skills and introduce women’s soccer to a new audience.
For years Sporting Stars was the only club in the Breede Valley that had a women’s soccer team.
The successes of the team attract a lot of new players to the three-time Safa Cape Winelands Women’s Regional League champions who are led by their inspirational captain Ebeneshia Malgas.
The following teams will take part in the tournament, which is a first for Worcester, Mbekweni Sundowns and Mbekweni Sports Centre from Drakenstein, Falcons from Stellenbosch, Franschhoek Spurs, Heideveld Ladies from Heideveld in Cape Town, CT Swallows from Gugulethu in Cape Town, Commodores from Caledon, Juventus from De Doorns and the hosts Sporting Stars will fly the flag high for the Breede Valley.
Buco Worcester is the main sponsor for the event.
Martin Oberholzer, branch manager of Buco Worcester, who for years gave back to the community no matter the sporting code is always willing to assist where he can.
