New restaurant phatFOODANDWINE opened her doors, stylishly and grandly, on Friday 18 November and served menu samples to distinguished guests, including Antoinette Steyn, Executive Mayor of Worcester.
phatFOODANDWINE is the lifelong ambition of co-owners Tony Soares and Vinni Quintal, both sons of Worcester.
Soares, born in Brazil, joined the Worcester-born Quintal three months into Sub A (now Grade 1), and from the day Quintal stole Soares’ lunch a true friendship was cemented.
They went on to matriculate at Worcester Gymnasium in 1994. After school, the two went out into the world, but always felt Worcester was home.
phatFOODANDWINE, located in the food court of the Mountain Mill Mall, is a trendy, cosmopolitan and swanky restaurant that serves everyday favourites prepared with a contemporary twist at affordable prices.
Ilze van Vuuren, phatFOODANDWINE’s Executive Chef and General Manager, has managed to develop a menu that is both modest and intricate, and is sure to satisfy the most discerning appetite.
The menu also features locally produced wines and craft beers.
“At phatFOODANDWINE we want to give back,” Soares said in his opening address.
“We want to support local business and acknowledge Worcester’s pillars.”
phatFOODANDWINE will therefore run daily specials, including a standing 15% off to those over 65, for teachers (Mondays), police and correctional service warders (Tuesdays), municipal workers (Wednesdays) and students (Thursdays).
phatFOODANDWINE’s staff has committed to donating R5 daily to the Little Fighters Cancer Trust. This will be matched by the owners of phatFOODANDWINE.
Leftovers from the grand opening were donated to and collected by the organisation RAEL.
