The Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 highway, between Paarl and Worcester, was temporarily closed this morning due to windy conditions.

Heavy motor vehicles, vehicles with trailers or caravans were not allowed to use this route from the toll plaza towards Worcester.  Motorists were advised to use the R101 Du Toit’s Kloof Pass as an alternate route.

The N1 has however been reopened again, although the wind speeds are being monitored.

The Huguenot Tunnel is Africa’s longest road tunnel at 3.9 km. Over the past 37 years more than 115 million vehicles, including 2,800 trucks daily, have made use of this much shorter route.
