Ou Kush Klaas, a Zwelethemba resident, warmed hearts on Mother’s Day (12 May) by distributing coffee to strangers at the Zwelethemba Cemetery.
It was a heartfelt gesture of kindness. Inspired by the memory of his late mother and his own experiences growing up, Ou Kush shared his story and motivations behind the act.
“I lost my mom in 2019, and I used to give her presents every Mother’s Day,” Ou Kush shared. “Now that my mom is gone, every elderly woman has become like a mother to me. I mourn with those who have lost their mothers and come to the gravesite early in the morning.”
Raised in a disadvantaged background and often facing rejection and bullying during his youth, Ou Kush found solace and inspiration in his mother’s teachings of love, sharing, respect and kindness. “All I have is because of my mother,” he emphasised.
The decision to distribute coffee stemmed from Ou Kush’s desire to offer comfort to those who gathered at the grave site on the chilly morning. “I gave coffee because it was cold, and this was my act of kindness,” he explained.
Ou Kush’s compassion extends beyond Mother’s Day. He regularly provides sandwiches and coffee or soup at the Empilisweni clinic, where his late mother received medication for high blood pressure and diabetes. “The long queues that leave everyone hungry are my inspiration behind that narrative,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Ou Kush dreams of opening a shelter for those in need, driven by his own experiences and his desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Through his actions Ou Kush exemplifies the power of kindness and empathy, demonstrating that even small gestures can have a profound impact on the community.
