The Breede Valley parkrun meanders through picturesque parts of Worcester.

The Breede Valley parkrun needs the assistance of the community to be able to continue each week.

Fortunately, the participation is back to the same levels as prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have an average of about 150 to 200 people participating every week,” says Antoinette Jordaan of the Breede Valley parkrun.

Though they have a core team that is there just about every week, when there are absentees on that team, it is a real struggle to find volunteers to work in the funnel.

“I have two groups of volunteers, those out on the route (marshals) and those that do the timing, scanning and tokens in the funnel. My struggle is mainly in the funnel as marshals get to do the route, but those in the funnel do not.”

Without volunteers, there will be no parkrun.

Parkrun is a community event, driven by the community for the community.

There has unfortunately already been one cancellation this year due to a lack of a run director.

“We only have one run director and no backup, so when the run director is not available, we have to cancel the parkrun.”

Volunteers are fundamental to the delivery of all events and carry out roles such as setting up the event, marshaling, timekeeping, scanning, handing out finish tokens or tail walking, to name just a few.

“We encourage each event to have as many volunteers as they can.

“A course can never have too many marshals and multiple tail walkers can make the event even more fun.”
