Western Cape severe weather response: Premier Winde to brief media tomorrow

Premier Alan Winde and members of the provincial Cabinet will brief the media tomorrow (Monday 18 May) on the Western Cape’s response to severe storms that have killed at least 10 people and displaced nearly 90 000 residents, the Western Cape Government said in a media advisory.

The storm’s impact

The Department of Health and Wellness confirmed 10 deaths as of Saturday 16 May 2026. The national government declared a national disaster, unlocking emergency funding across all three spheres of government. The South African Weather Service issued an Orange Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall across Cape Town, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch and Theewaterskloof.

The City of Cape Town confirmed over 16 000 electricity service requests since 11 May, with crews attending to approximately 10 762 faults. All public schools in the Western Cape closed on 12 May on the advice of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.
