Western Cape honour teachers for their contribution

In light of World Teachers’ Day being celebrated on Monday (5 October) teachers across the globe are being recognised for their contribution to learners and the education sphere.

The day also marks the start of Teacher Appreciation Month, during which communities are being encouraged to acknowledge teachers who make a difference in children’s lives every day.

Western Cape Minister of Education Jaco Londt said teachers’ contribution extends far beyond their formal duties in the classroom.

“We know that much of what teachers do happens beyond the classroom and long after the school bell has rung. They show up for our learners every day, giving their time, energy and commitment because they care.”

Teachers’ contribution highlighted

He highlighted three Western Cape teachers who recently took top honours at the National Teaching Awards and whose work has had a lasting impact on learners and communities.

They are Mthobi Fihla, Danielle Bosch and Hortense Stegmann. Fihla was awarded 1st place in the Excellence in Inclusive Education Leadership category; Bosch also took first place in the Excellence in Grade R Teaching category; and Stegmann was similarly crowned in the Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning category.

What guides Stegmann is the following motto: “Nurture every learner’s potential, empower growth, inspire blossoming brilliance.” Fihla was recognised for his perseverance, visionary leadership and commitment to bringing inclusive education closer to learners who needed it most. While Bosch believes every child can succeed when provided with the appropriate support, encouragement and opportunities.

“These individuals exemplify the power of teachers. They not only teach, but they lead, innovate and change lives,” Londt added.

Calls to acknowledge teachers

Their recognition comes as the province calls on learners, parents, former learners and communities to take part in Teacher Appreciation Month by thanking teachers who have made a difference in their lives or the lives of their children.

According to Londt teachers continue to make their contribution despite the challenges they face every day.

“And they do so quietly and consistently, despite immense daily challenges.”

He urged communities across the Western Cape to use the month to recognise the care, dedication and sacrifices of teachers.

“To every teacher: thank you for the care, dedication and sacrifices you make every day.”
