The Western Cape Government has allocated R15 million to upgrade cricket facilities ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, with funding directed towards WSB Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park in Paarl.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) and Cricket Boland on Tuesday, 7 April, formalising financial support for infrastructure improvements at the two venues that will host tournament matches.
Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie emphasised the economic impact of hosting international sporting events.

“The Western Cape has shown that we are capable of successfully hosting World Cup events and we look forward to seeing the Cricket World Cup here next year,” Mackenzie said. “These kinds of events help to support our local economy as they not only bring economic investment, but also support job creation.”
Cricket officials welcome support
WPCA CEO Corrie van Zyl expressed gratitude for the government backing, stating the investment would ensure WSB Newlands Cricket Ground “will be ready to host world-class cricket” and “strengthens our ability to deliver a memorable World Cup experience for players, fans, and the broader community.”
WPCA President Johannes Adams described the government-cricket partnership as “vital to the success of major events,” thanking the Western Cape Government for support that “not only benefits the World Cup but also leaves a lasting legacy for cricket in our province.”

Boland Cricket highlighted plans for a dedicated purpose-built player and match officials area at Boland Park, describing the government investment as “a lasting commitment to world-class facilities that will serve athletes, officials and our community for generations to come.”
The Cricket World Cup tournament is scheduled to take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia during October and November 2027.
