Free holiday rugby clinic a success

A sports management company marked a significant milestone by hosting its first free Rugby Coaching Clinics during the July school holidays.

Young athletes from Vredenburg, Saldanha and Laingville were provided with an opportunity to develop their rugby skills while building confidence and teamwork.

The three-day initiative brought together children from the three communities to participate in structured coaching sessions aimed at developing both sporting ability and personal growth.

Organisers said the programme was designed to be about more than rugby, creating a platform where young people feel supported, valued and encouraged to pursue their potential

Alfredo Barends, ALTHO+ Sports Management NPC CEO, described the inaugural clinics as a proud and emotional milestone for the organisation.

“When I stood on those fields and watched our first Rugby Clinics come to life, it was a very special and emotional moment.

“What started as an idea and a dream became a reality,” Barends said.

He said the organisation was founded on the belief that every dream deserves an opportunity.

“Growing up in our communities, we know there is no shortage of talent. Sometimes all that is missing is the right opportunity, guidance and support.

“We want to help create those opportunities.”

Although currently working in China, Barends returned home to attend all three clinics.

“Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces, their willingness to learn and the passion they brought onto the field reminded me why this journey started.

“It has never only been about rugby, but about giving hope, building confidence and showing every child that they matter,” he said.

He added that the organisation intends to expand similar initiatives in future to continue creating opportunities for young people across local communities.they also acknowledged the support of sponsors and community partners who helped make the inaugural clinics possible.

The organisation thanked West Coast Community Trust, Aquarius MOGS Saldanha (Pty) Ltd, Pick ‘n Pay Vredenburg, St Helena Bay Spar, OK Minimark Saldanha, Dalwai Transport, represented by Ismail Dalwai, and Marionette Maart for their contributions.

Organisers said the support received helped create a memorable experience for the participating children while investing in the future of local youth through sport.
