Elands Bay is known for its world-class waves and peaceful beauty. Surfers have long returned here for clarity, space or a wave other locations can’t deliver.

Now, the 9Miles Project is asking the surfing community to give back. For nearly 10 years it has quietly supported children and young people in Elands Bay. Its local clubhouse has become more than just a place for surfboards; it is a safe space where kids find consistency, connection and a sense of belonging. More children are attending after-school sessions, more surfboards are in the water and more young people are finding stability.

But growth has also highlighted the limitations of the current clubhouse. Showers and toilets are limited, indoor spaces are cramped and the facility cannot fully support the growing number of participants.

Without upgrades the programme’s impact is at risk.”For us this has never just been about surfing,” said Nigel Savel, founder of the 9Miles Project.

“The clubhouse is where relationships are built, where kids feel safe after school, and where a community shows up for its own.”

The hours after school are often the most vulnerable. The clubhouse provides a structured, caring space during that critical time, somewhere kids can wash off, feel supported and be part of something positive.

To make the upgrades possible the 9Miles Project has launched Create a Legacy in Elands Bay, inviting 1 000 people to donate R1 000 each.

The funds will go directly towards improving the clubhouse, allowing more children to benefit from this vital space. This is a call to surfers, West Coast lovers and anyone who has felt the calm of Elands Bay, the thrill of a perfect wave or the magic of long sunsets.

By contributing you help build a future where children can thrive long after the swell has passed.
