Residents and businesses affected by dust pollution in the Saldanha Bay area, especially Saldanha, Vredenburg and

Langebaan, now have a new tool to report their concerns about the prevailing red dust, quickly and directly through a centralised WhatsApp complaints system launched by the Red Dust Action Group (RDAG).

The system, developed in partnership with the University of Cape Town and the Mine Dust Network, combines WhatsApp technology with artificial intelligence to simplify the way pollution complaints are captured, managed and escalated to authorities.

According to RDAG the platform’s is already proving very effective, with complaint submissions increasing by more than 1 700% since its inception. The group believes the increase shows many residents have previously struggled with fragmented and ineffective reporting channels.

RDAG categorically states that its initiative is about unlocking and unleashing the potential of the port, and not about stopping exports or shutting down the iron ore terminal. The organisation says the opposite is true. “A cleaner port is a stronger port,” RDAG says. “If we want to unlock more iron ore and commodity exports, create more jobs, attract investment and future-proof the harbour and West Coast economy, then cleaner operational protocols are essential to attract outside investment.”

RDAG argues that reducing dust pollution can strengthen tourism, improve property values, attract further investment to the region, and improve the quality of life for residents.

Using the platform is straightforward. Residents scan a QR code (see picture) with their cellphone camera and select “Submit a Complaint”, which opens the RDAG WhatsApp AI line. By typing the word “Complaint” users are guided through a six-step reporting process available in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.

The AI-assisted system allows residents to report issues such as dust settling on homes, business disruptions or general dissatisfaction with pollution levels. Complaints are automatically directed to relevant authorities and stakeholders while also creating a centralised record of community concerns.

RDAG said the system has replaced outdated complaint channels and aims to improve accountability, transparency and public participation by ensuring all complaints are captured in one place.

The organisation believes the centralised database will help strengthen enforcement efforts by consolidating the experiences of residents and businesses into what it describes as “a single, powerful voice”.

Residents can submit as many complaints as needed, with no limits placed on participation. For more information visit rdag.org.za | www.facebook.com/RedDustActionGroup | Email to ceo@rdag.org.za.
