Rugby enthusiasts can gear up for a weekend of full-paced rugby action at the sixth annual Saldanha Super 8 Easter Rugby Tournament.

Starting off the big event in style, a launch took place at the Saldanha Bay Hotel on Friday 4 April with team captains, sponsors and other dignitaries present.

The eight teams participating is Saldanha, Tygerberg, Villagers Worcester, Blanco United, Kruisfontein, Multisure Evergreens, Hamiltons and Northam Rhinos.

With much suspense and excitement the much anticipated draw determined that the host Saldanha Rugby Club will go head-to-head with Villagers Worcester, Tygerberg with Hamiltons, Multisure Evergreens with Northam Rhinos and Blanco United with Kruisfontein, all competing for the Louis Scheepers Trophy. The tournament will kick off on Thursday 17 April to Monday 21 April at the Transnet Saldanha Stadium.

André Truter, mayor of the Saldanha Bay Municipality also took the podium and heeded a welcome to all the clubs and supporters from the various towns and encouraged all to be safe on and off the field as well as on the roads.

It is once again known that many will be making their way to Saldanha giving an economic boost to the town.

In his speech, Bertram Vraagom, director of the tournament welcomed all the clubs and thanked all the sponsors for their contributions. In his speech last year, Vraagom said when the tournament was first launched in 2018 the organisers didn’t think the tournament would become the powerful, vibrant and much-loved event it has among sport lovers. “It has indeed become quite a festive event on the annual calendar,” he said.

Vraagom hopes that every player and every club will have a blessed tournament and enjoy their time in Saldanha. He also highlighted that every player should play the tournament in the right spirit.

The tournament will also be broadcasted on SuperSport.
