VREDENBURG – Vredenburg-born rugby player Stedman Gans celebrated a major milestone on Saturday when he earned his 100th cap for the Bulls in their United Rugby Championship (URC) clash against Benetton at Loftus Versfeld.
According to Craig Taylor of KickOff Gans, reflecting on his journey from the West Coast to professional rugby, said he still felt connected to the talented players and friends he grew up with in Vredenburg.
He said his family’s move to Pretoria after his father received a job opportunity opened new doors for him in rugby. “At the time I never really thought rugby could become a career.
“Moving to Pretoria exposed me to a different level of coaching and competition.”
The versatile back began his career at the Bulls before spending several years in Sevens rugby, where he developed skills that later helped him return successfully to the 15-man game.
Gans described reaching 100 games for the Bulls as a blessing and credited his family’s sacrifices and hard work for enabling him to achieve such milestones.
The Bulls marked the occasion with a victory over Benetton, strengthening their hopes of securing a home quarter-final in the URC.
For many on the West Coast Gans’ achievement highlights the rugby talent that exists in the region when opportunity and dedication come together.
