The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is urging the public to prioritise blood donation this winter, a period when supplies typically come under pressure while hospital demand remains unchanged. Colder weather, flu and school holidays often result in fewer donors, placing strain op available stock.

Marike Carli, WCBS Public Relations Manager, says consistent donations are critical during this time. “When donation levels drop, it directly affects patients who rely op blood every day. We encourage donors not to delay or skip donations during winter.”

A single donation takes about 30 minutes and can save up to three lives. Donation centres across the province remain open. Healthy individuals aged 16 to 75, weighing at least 50kg, are eligible to donate every 56 days. Donors should eat beforehand and stay hydrated.
