Nicky Rheeder, Subcouncil 1 chairperson, resigned last week. She is immigrating.

Rheeder, who wrote a monthly column for Weskus Nuus, “Out of the Chamber” has the following message for its readers:

“I can hardly believe I am writing my final words to Weskus Nuus readers and Subcouncil 1 residents. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you my family and I are relocating, and therefore my last day with the City of Cape Town will be 31 March.

“My time in this Subcouncil has been brief, but filled to the brim with activities, projects, meetings, organisations, celebrations, much happiness and some sadness. I have always had a love for Atlantis and have always been amazed at the incredible talents streaming from here, that just seem to be endless.

“I was very excited to begin working with the Atlantis, Pella, Mamre, and Witsand communities. I received much resistance in the beginning, but before long I had built relationships with the most amazing people.

“I have been with the City for almost nine years, six and a half of which as a councillor. I can honestly say this last year and a half has been the best.

“I want to thank every person who gave me a chance, who put their trust in me, guided me and taught me. I will never forget you and I will forever keep these memories close. I hope I have done you proud. You are in the hands of some amazing councillors so I leave in peace, knowing you will be looked after.

“A great big word of thanks to the councillors in the subcouncil who have made my job so easy and have worked so hard, pushing and driving issues to ensure the upliftment of the community.

“We are a team, each bringing their own expertise and playing their part to ensure the successes we have achieved. I must also thank the subcouncil staff under the leadership of [Wessie] van der Westhuizen, who has been my right hand. Without my subcouncil manager and his team we would never have been able to take any steps forward.

“You have never said no, or that something is impossible. You have always been a part of the team that has made all this work.

“With that I wish you all well and look forward to visiting and seeing all the wonderful developments that have taken place.”
