Since January 28 arrests were made for theft of non-ferrous metal and possession of cable, according to local police spokesperson Captain Lisa Munro.
These cases are under investigation by the Economic Infrastructure Task Team based in Lentegeur, she said. Munro added the community recently assisted the police with information that two males were tampering with aluminium cables on an open field in Gazonia Street in Protea Park on Wednesday 22 June around 02:45.
Officers attached to the crime prevention unit attended to the complaint and caught the suspects – two males from Gazonia Street and Heathfield Court, respectively – in the act cutting the cables.
After questioning, one suspect pointed out to the police where they hid the other stolen aluminium cable at a flat at Heathfield Court, Munro added. Both men were arrested and will appear before the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court once charged, Munro confirmed.
Suspects involved in these cases can expect heavy sentencing as a zero-tolerance policy by all law-enforcement agencies has been adopted, Munro concluded. The police are urging anyone with information to phone 021 571 8500 or Police Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information will be strictly confidential.
