WELKOM – Welkom police have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a decomposed female body in an open field near Sandania, with investigators also examining the possibility of sexual assault.

On Saturday, 8 November 2024, police were summoned to investigate a possible murder scene in an open field near Sandania. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of an African female in an advanced state of decomposition.

According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was found partially clothed with visible injuries to her body. The condition of the remains suggests the body had been at the location for a considerable period.

The deceased, estimated to be in her late twenties, was discovered wearing black leggings, a black bodysuit, black blouse, and black slippers. She bears a distinctive tattoo with the name “Katelica” above her left breast, which may assist in identification efforts.

The partial state of undress and visible injuries have prompted investigators to explore the possibility that the victim may have been sexually assaulted before her death.

The motive for the alleged murder remains unknown at this stage, with police investigations continuing. Authorities have not yet released information regarding potential suspects or circumstances surrounding the death.

Welkom police are urgently appealing to members of the public who may have information that could assist with the investigation or lead to the arrest of those responsible.
