The Carling Currie Cup First Division heats up this weekend with three crucial matches as teams look to climb the standings in what promises to be a weekend of high-octane rugby action across the country.

The weekend’s rugby feast begins on Friday evening when the Border Bulldogs host the Phangela SWD Eagles at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. With kickoff scheduled for 18:00, both teams enter the clash desperate to secure their first win of the new campaign.

The Bulldogs, despite finishing the SA Cup without victories, have shown impressive form on home soil. Their passionate home support could prove crucial against an Eagles side still smarting from last week’s narrow five-point defeat to Eastern Province in a thrilling encounter.

“Playing at Sisa Dukashe gives us a significant advantage,” a Border spokesperson commented. “Our fans create an incredible atmosphere that lifts the team.”

Recent history favors the Eagles, who dismantled Border 45-26 in their previous meeting in George last year. However, the Bulldogs’ improved home performances suggest this encounter could be much closer than their last meeting.

The NovaVit Griffons find themselves in unfamiliar territory after competing in the Premier Division for the past two seasons. Now back in the First Division following their unsuccessful qualification attempt during the SA Cup, they host Eastern Province at 15:00 on Saturday in a must-win encounter.

Coming off a disappointing 10-point loss to the Valke in their opening fixture, the Welkom-based side cannot afford another setback if they harbor ambitions of an immediate return to the top flight. However, they face a formidable opponent in Eastern Province, who have already proven their potential to upset teams away from home.

EP defeated the Griffons in their SA Cup clash back in May, but the Northern Free State team will take comfort from their convincing 45-16 victory when the teams last met in First Division action on Griffons territory.

The weekend’s most anticipated match sees early pacesetters clash when the Valke welcome the Leopards to Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Saturday at 15:00. Both sides, alongside Eastern Province, are currently tied at the top of the standings with five points apiece after successful opening weekends.

The Valke will be banking on home advantage to continue their winning ways, having emerged victorious in last season’s high-scoring 45-35 encounter in Potchefstroom. However, the Leopards, fresh from overcoming Border, will fancy their chances of repeating their May 2022 triumph when they secured a 25-15 win at Olen Park.

With early-season momentum at stake, this clash could set the tone for both teams’ championship aspirations in what promises to be a fiercely contested battle on the East Rand.
