The final round of the 2026 Carling Currie Cup First Division will see five teams fighting for four semi-final places across three crucial matches on Saturday.
With the Dotsure SWD Eagles already guaranteed a playoff berth and Border eliminated from contention, Eastern Province, the Valke, Griffons and Leopards head into the weekend knowing every point could determine whether their season continues.
The Eagles have emerged as the competition’s dominant force under former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. The George-based side remain unbeaten and sit atop the standings following their 54-26 victory over defending champions Griffons in Welkom two weeks ago.
SWD will host second-placed Eastern Province in George on Saturday in what shapes as the round’s marquee fixture. While the Eagles have already secured their semi-final spot, they will want to maintain momentum heading into the playoffs.
Eastern Province need just one log point to confirm their place in the final four, though the Elephants will target a win to improve their seeding. EP showed fighting spirit in their recent 40-32 comeback victory over the Leopards after trailing at halftime.
The season’s most critical match takes place in Kempton Park, where third-placed Valke host the Griffons in what amounts to a knockout encounter.
The Valke have built their campaign on attacking rugby, most notably in their 96-19 demolition of Border Bulldogs where they scored 14 tries. That result has given them a valuable points difference advantage in the race for playoff positions.
For the Griffons, the equation is simple: win or face elimination. The Northern Free State side have lost their last two matches against SWD and EP and must rediscover last season’s title-winning form.
The day’s earliest kick-off sees Border host the Leopards in a match that could significantly impact the final standings. The Leopards know maximum points would virtually guarantee them a semi-final berth despite suffering several narrow defeats this season.
Border, still winless, will be determined to end their campaign on a positive note in front of home supporters. Because this match kicks off 30 minutes before the other fixtures, the result could alter calculations for teams taking the field later in George and Kempton Park.
