Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken box-office records in its opening weekend across the US and Canada.

The latest Spider-Man film has broken the record for the biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office, updated figures released on Monday confirmed.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $360 million across the United States and Canada during its debut weekend, production company Sony Pictures announced. The figure surpasses Sunday’s estimate of $355 million.

The film has overtaken Disney’s Avengers: Endgame, which held the previous record with $357 million when it opened in 2019. The figures are not adjusted for inflation.

Globally, Brand New Day brought in $932 million during its opening weekend, placing it second to Endgame’s record-breaking $1.2 billion debut.

British actor Tom Holland returns as the web-slinging superhero in the film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The story follows Peter Parker living in isolation after erasing his identity from the world whilst grappling with changes to his mutant powers.

The plot sees Spider-Man reconnecting with former girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, who is Holland’s real-life wife, and best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. The hero must battle a new threat to New York City.

Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh and Sadie Sink also star in the film, which arrives ahead of Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for release in December.

Variety described the opening as “mind-boggling”, noting that Brand New Day and Endgame are the only two films to ever earn $300 million in a single weekend.

The Spider-Man debut competed with Christopher Nolan’s latest release The Odyssey for IMAX screens.
