The facts are stark. Violence erupted at a schoolboy rugby match. Parents and learners were involved in a mass brawl. And crucially, not a single Menlopark 1st XV player participated in the violence that forced abandonment of their Noordvaal Cup clash against Dr. E.G. Jansen on Saturday.

Now both school principals have broken their silence, issuing formal statements that condemn the violence whilst providing their institutions’ accounts of what transpired at Menlopark’s fields on 1 August 2026. And in a dramatic development, Menlopark’s school governing body has fired back with a blistering rebuttal, calling EG Jansen’s racism allegations “entirely without foundation”.

The statements reveal a deeply troubling picture involving allegations of racist abuse, alcohol consumption by spectators, and claims that an EG Jansen player was assaulted, all of which Menlopark now categorically denies.

Menlopark: Pride in players who stayed clear

Principal of Menlopark, Kobus Hartman’s, statement on behalf of Menlopark opened with unequivocal condemnation before highlighting conduct, his first team’s complete non-involvement in the violence.

“The violent conduct of persons (adults and schoolchildren) alongside the rugby field on Saturday, 1 August 2026, is strongly condemned by the management and governing body of Menlopark High School,” Hartman declared.

He then turned his focus to what he termed “exemplary conduct” from the Menlopark 1st XV and their coaching staff.

“I am proud of our first team and their coaches. Their conduct in walking away from the situation and not becoming involved testifies to maturity and character,” the principal stated.

Whilst leading 36-5 and dominating the match, when violence erupted around them, they maintained discipline and removed themselves entirely from the confrontation.

Hartman welcomed the official investigation launched by Noordvaal Schools Rugby, expressing confidence in the process. “Menlopark High School welcomes this step and trusts that a factual and transparent process, supported by reports and video material, will provide an accurate reflection of how events unfolded.”

His statement concluded with an urgent appeal to the Menlopark community. “I request our parents, staff and learners to refrain from any negative, speculative or unnecessary commentary on social media” whilst the investigation proceeds.

EG Jansen: Serious allegations detailed

Mr. van Aswegen, principal at Dr. EG Jansen’s statement, opened with equally strong condemnation whilst making clear the school would not attempt to justify any involvement in violence.

“Hoërskool Dr. E.G. Jansen does not condone the conduct of any person or learner involved in the incident during the rugby match against Hoërskool Menlopark, nor does the school attempt to justify or excuse any such conduct,” he wrote.

“The school is committed to addressing any improper conduct in terms of the school’s code of conduct. Violence, racism, or any other form of unacceptable behaviour does not align with the school’s values, discipline and principles.”

Van Aswegen then detailed specific allegations based on statements and information available to the school.

According to the principal, a group of Menlopark old boys set up a gazebo behind the Jansen try line from the start of the match. “According to statements received by the school, alcohol was consumed and several racist remarks were made against Dr. E.G. Jansen players. This allegedly includes the use of the K-word,” Van Aswegen stated.

The principal continued: “According to the information, parents of Dr. E.G. Jansen brought the situation to the attention of a teacher from Hoërskool Menlopark and requested that the group of old boys be removed from behind the try line because they allegedly repeatedly caused disruption.”

Van Aswegen then detailed what EG Jansen claim triggered the physical confrontation. “According to available information, the situation escalated further after one of Hoërskool Dr. E.G. Jansen’s players was allegedly pulled over a fence and assaulted. After that, a physical confrontation arose and parents of Dr. E.G. Jansen intervened in an attempt to protect their children.”

The principal confirmed that the EG Jansen learners allegedly involved has been identified and the school “is already proceeding with internal disciplinary action in terms of the school’s code of conduct.”

“A comprehensive report together with statements and other available documentation is currently being compiled for submission to the Department of Basic Education,” he said.

Menlopark SGB fires back: “entirely without foundation”

Hours after EG Jansen’s statement circulated, Menlopark’s school governing body issued a blistering rebuttal that directly challenges the racism allegations and questions their credibility.

Dr. J.D. de Wet, chairperson of the Menlopark school governing body, didn’t mince words in his response.

“Die Hoërskool Menlopark has noted with dismay the allegations contained in the press statement issued by Dr. E.G. Jansen regarding the incident,” De Wet began.

“An investigation led by an independent chairperson is at an advanced stage. All evidence considered to date, including statements from neutral match officials, indicates that the allegations of racist remarks are entirely without foundation.”

The SGB chairperson then questioned the timing of the allegations. “It is regrettable that these allegations are only being raised four days after the incident, and it would be extremely damaging if this proves to be a desperate fabrication intended to shift blame.”

“This incident stands in direct contradiction to the core ethos of Die Hoërskool Menlopark,” De Wet continued, before emphasising: “We wish to emphasize that none of our players, coaches or staff were involved in the violent incident.”

De Wet concluded: “We expressly wish to distance ourselves from these false allegations and will shortly submit the investigation’s final findings to Noordvaal rugby.”

The credibility battle

The stakes just escalated dramatically. This is no longer just competing accounts of a brawl, this is a direct challenge to the truthfulness of serious allegations.

EG Jansen claims racist abuse occurred, including use of the K-word. Menlopark’s governing body claims independent evidence from neutral match officials proves those allegations are “entirely without foundation” and potentially “a desperate fabrication.”
