Dismissed Crime Intelligence deputy head Major-General Feroz Khan’s uncle-in-law, Preggy Padayachee, was shot dead on the R21 near OR Tambo International Airport after his vehicle broke down on Monday night. A passenger was also wounded. The killing came hours before Khan was due to testify behind closed doors at the Madlanga Commission, after months of delays. His testimony has been postponed to a date yet to be set. Khan survived a separate shooting earlier this year.
In the Western Cape, learner transport services have been suspended from today after contractors said the Education Department failed to meet a deadline over soaring diesel costs. The operators’ council says diesel has increased from R17.69 per litre in January to R28.68 in September, with another increase taking effect at midnight. Education Minister Jaco Londt met contractors today and hopes no learner will be affected for the rest of the week.
And on a lighter note, Life Beacon Bay Hospital in KuGompo City has celebrated a landmark delivery – a baby boy tipping the scales at 6.37kg, nearly twice the average newborn weight. His parents named him Izimakhe, and the hospital says both mother and baby are in good health.
