Police are investigating a murder and attempted murder case after a man was shot dead on the R21 road near OR Tambo International Airport on Monday evening.
Media reports have identified the victim as Preggy Padayachee, who is said to be a close family member of Major-General Feroz Khan, the former deputy head of Crime Intelligence. Khan is expected to give in-camera evidence at the Madlanga Commission today, Tuesday 6 October.
According to police, the shooting took place on Monday evening, 5 October, near Griffiths Road on the R21 towards the airport.
Police say a Fiat broke down on the road and the driver contacted a friend for help. The friend arrived with two other people to assist with the vehicle.
While the group attended to the car, gunfire was directed at them. The driver tried to escape but lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a jersey barrier.
The driver died at the scene from fatal injuries. One passenger was shot and wounded, and was taken to hospital. A third person escaped unharmed.
Police have not confirmed the identity of the victim or established a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made.
The shooting happened hours before Khan was due to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating alleged criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
Khan’s testimony was delayed after he was shot in Houghton, Johannesburg, on 28 June. Police described the incident as an attempted assassination. He was hospitalised in critical condition and was later reportedly re-admitted to hospital.

The Madlanga Commission granted permission for Khan’s evidence to be heard behind closed doors. The commission said it will question him about evidence previously read into the record, including allegations concerning an IT-related Treasury contract kickback, the 2021 Aeroton drug bust, his finances and property.
Attendees at the in-camera proceedings are prohibited from publishing or broadcasting recordings of the hearing.
Police have appealed to anyone with information about the R21 shooting to come forward.
