This year marks the 10th annual Garden Day, taking place on Sunday, 12 October, and inviting South Africans to revel in the beauty of their gardens alongside their beloved pets.

The event encourages participants to pause their gardening routines, craft flower crowns, and gather with family, friends, and furry companions, celebrating the therapeutic benefits of green spaces.

Since its inception a decade ago, Garden Day has transformed into a nationwide celebration, capturing the hearts of pet owners and gardening enthusiasts alike.

Gundula Deutschländer, a Master Gardener from Babylonstoren, speaks about the connection between pets and plants: “Pets and plants both have a remarkable ability to elevate our mood and give us purpose. Including them in Garden Day feels completely natural.”

Research highlights that caring for both animals and plants can reduce stress, enhance productivity, and foster a sense of purpose. Whether tending to a garden or caring for a pet, these nurturing activities serve a vital role in daily life. Garden Day serves as a reminder of this essential caregiver role, whilst also providing an opportunity to celebrate the last decade of the movement.

“The past ten years have seen a shift in lifestyles, with a growing appreciation for wellness and sustainability,” says Deutschländer. “Most of our pets enjoy our gardens more than we do. It’s only fair they get to join in the celebrations too.”

To participate in the festivities, Garden Day enthusiasts can create matching flower crowns for themselves and their pets, host a garden picnic, or simply relax together in the serene surroundings of their green spaces. Resources such as tutorials and invitations are available free of charge at www.gardenday.co.za.

As Garden Day approaches, participants are encouraged to share their garden party photos using the hashtag #GardenDaySA, celebrating the joy of nature and companionship on this special day. Join the movement on Sunday, 12 October, and honour the gardens that nurture us and the pets that bring us joy.
