The Dihlabeng municipality’s sports facilities are crumbling, urgently requiring comprehensive restoration to preserve community recreational opportunities and youth development potential.

The DA in Dihlabeng is preparing to take decisive action by demanding a comprehensive 30-day restoration plan for critically neglected sports facilities at Bohlokong, Vogelfontein, and Bakenpark.

DA Councillor Estie Senekal highlighted the alarming state of local sports infrastructure during recent oversight visits.

“Our investigation revealed shocking evidence of systematic neglect,” said Senekal.

“Football fields are dangerously littered with large stones, netball courts stand without essential equipment, and tennis courts lack basic infrastructure. The most distressing discovery is the complete absence of fundamental amenities like changing rooms and bathroom facilities, forcing athletes to seek alternative solutions.”

The party said this infrastructure breakdown is more than an administrative failure – t represents a fundamental breach of municipal responsibility towards community development.

“Sports facilities are not optional luxuries, but critical investments in youth empowerment and social cohesion.”

The DA requested the following from the municipality: detailed repair timelines, comprehensive maintenance strategies, regular public progress reporting and immediate safety improvements at these facilities.

Senekal said these much-needed sports facilities are lifelines for the community’s young talent.

“Their deterioration is unacceptable and directly undermines opportunities for athletic development and community engagement. By addressing these infrastructure challenges, Dihlabeng can reinvigorate its sports ecosystem, providing safe, accessible, and inspiring environments for current and future generations of athletes.”
