WARDEN – Sibusiso Malinga was sentenced to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for housebreaking and rape at the Warden Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July. The traumatic incident unfolded on 24 September last year in the Ezenzeleni township near Warden, when the victim’s peaceful night was violently disrupted.
Malinga broke into her home at 02:00. Sudden noises awoke the sleeping victim. Upon investigating, she encountered Malinga in her corridor. In a horrifying moment, he forcefully grabbed her, covering her mouth to stifle her screams. Threatening her with a knife, he brutally stabbed her right hand before sexually assaulting her twice in the bathroom.
After Malinga fled the scene, the victim immediately sought help by flagging down a passing police vehicle. Her quick action led to Malinga’s prompt arrest, with WO Daniel Twala from the Vrede Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit handling the investigation.
Magistrate Pillay Botes presided over the case, with prosecutor Sammie Camphor presenting compelling evidence that ultimately resulted in the significant 22-year sentence.
Police spokesperson WO Mmako Mophiring says the verdict sends a strong message about the consequences of sexual violence and provides some measure of closure for the victim.
“The 22-year prison term reflects the heinous nature of Malinga’s crimes and our unwavering commitment to protecting society’s most vulnerable members.”
