The Kroonstad Regional Court sentenced two men to life imprisonment last week for the brutal murder of a farmer in October 2020.
William Sejane (57) and Lucky Motaung (54), both seasoned criminals, were found guilty of the murder and house robbery of 66-year-old Dave Wessels.
The harrowing events unfolded on the night of 3 and 4 October 2020 when Wessels was viciously attacked at his home in Viljoenskroon. According to police reports, the assailants gained entry through a rear window and overpowered the elderly farmer.
Authorities discovered Wessels tied up with his head wrapped in plastic – a chilling indication of the brutality of the crime. In addition to the murder, the perpetrators made off with Wessels’s white Toyota bakkie and various household items, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
In a concerted effort to ensure justice, the police prioritised the case under their 24-Hour Activation Plan. Sgt. Morena Machalotsa of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit led the investigation, which revealed a series of critical leads.
The stolen vehicle was recovered at a workshop in Orkney, whilst Wessels’s bank card was tracked to multiple transactions in Orkney, Klerksdorp, and Potchefstroom. Surveillance footage subsequently identified Motaung making purchases with the stolen card, eventually leading to both men’s arrest.
A significant aspect of this case is Sejane’s criminal history – he was on parole after serving a life sentence for a similar crime.
The sentencing, which included life imprisonment for murder and an additional seven years for house robbery, serves as a stark warning to criminals. Police have called upon the community for ongoing vigilance against the factors contributing to rural crime, such as socioeconomic challenges and inadequate policing resources in remote areas.
The conviction of Sejane and Motaung marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing battle against violent farm killings in the country.
Whilst the court’s decision provides some form of closure for the Wessels family, it also underscores the urgent need for sustained efforts to enhance security and support for those living in vulnerable rural communities.
