A Gr. 10 learner of the Hoërskool Trio in Kroonstad participated in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Regional Science Fair in Welkom during August. Helene Fourie received a gold medal and was named winner in the Scientific Investigation category. She also received the prize for the best project presented by a girl learner, as well as the best senior project. She was chosen to participate in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF), hosted at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg from 23 to 27 September. Only 308 learners of the almost 15 000 who participated in the regional events all over the country were chosen to present their project at this event. Several other countries participated, including: Mexico, Russia, Ireland, India and Turkey. At the ISF Helene received a silver medal in the Plant Sciences category. Her project “Low-G food” investigated the influence of microgravity (as in space) on plant growth and how it would influence the nutrient levels of these plants as a food source for astronauts.Foto: Verskaf
