Questions are being raised about the progress of the refurbishment of the Bakenpark Swimming Pool in Bethlehem after the 2026-’27 budget tabled by Cllr Tseki Tseki, executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, allocated a further R1,5 million to the project.

Despite the latest funding allocation, the swimming pool remains closed, with the only visible work at the site appearing to be the replacement of the perimeter fence.

Residents have been waiting for years for both the Bakenpark Swimming Pool and the Muller Street Swimming Pool to reopen, with little sign that the facilities are any closer to becoming operational.

The DA says it has repeatedly requested a technical progress report and a realistic completion timeline through the Community Services Portfolio Committee and in writing, but no response has been received. The party argues that the lack of visible progress raises serious concerns about the municipality’s commitment to restoring these recreational facilities.

It has called on the municipality to publish a detailed breakdown of how the R1,5 million allocation is being spent; disclose how much has already been paid out and for which aspects of the project; release the outstanding technical progress report; and provide realistic reopening dates for both the swimming pools within 30 days.

The continued closure of the two public pools has left many residents questioning when these community facilities will finally be restored.

Calls are also growing for greater transparency on municipal spending and for visible service delivery that delivers lasting benefits to the people of Dihlabeng.
