Residents of the Dihlabeng region, particularly near Rietfontein and Astral Farm, are on high alert following reports of a lion or lions roaming in the area, leading to livestock attacks. The Dihlabeng Local Municipality issued a warning on 5 November, urging locals to exercise caution as the situation unfolds.
The Four Paws Big Cat Sanctuary, a leading animal welfare organisation, has confirmed that all their big cats are safe and accounted for after thorough internal checks and an inspection by local authorities on Thursday 6 November.
“Our priority remains the safety of both the community and the alleged animal(s) involved,” stated Fiona Miles, director of Four Paws in South Africa.
“We are ready to assist local authorities should the need arise.”
Marius Dreyer, chairperson of the Bethlehem SPCA, says they are aware of the incident reported by the Dihlabeng Municipality and that wildlife inspectors and authorities are currently investigating the reports.
Four Paws has advised residents to remain indoors and report any unusual animal behaviour or sightings of lions to local police.
“It is crucial that the public stays informed through credible news sources regarding the situation,” says Miles. She warned residents never to approach wild animals and to keep children and pets indoors.
VrystaatKroon is awaiting comments from Tshediso Maitse, spokesperson for the Dihlabeng Municipality, regarding ongoing efforts to address the public’s concerns.
The community is encouraged to stay alert and follow safety protocols as the investigation continues.
