St Michael’s School for Girls, an educational beacon in the Free State for 150 years, proudly stands as the oldest girls’ school north of the Orange River.
As it enters its sesquicentennial year, the school prepares for a series of special events to commemorate this significant milestone.
The anticipation for the school’s 150th birthday is heightened by the appointment of Noèline Stumpfe as the new headmistress at the end of last year.
The school community is eager to witness the fresh perspectives and initiatives she brings to continue the legacy of academic excellence and character development that St Michael’s is known for.
In addition to the exciting changes in leadership, the matric results for the class of 2023 have brought further glory to St Michael’s.
For the 44th consecutive year, the school achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate, showcasing its unwavering commitment to academic achievement. Notably, an impressive 94,3% of the girls attained a bachelor’s pass, a testament to the dedication of both students and educators.
Stumpfe expressed her pride in the accomplishments of the matric class, stating: “The consistent success of our learners is a reflection of the collective effort of our dedicated staff, motivated learners and supportive parents.”
Last year the school embarked on a building project, which was concluded in December 2023. The school now boasts a brand new tennis clubhouse, amongst others. The newly developed circle at the main building is a great addition to the school gardens.
As St Michael’s School for Girls gears up for a year of celebratory events, the school community looks forward to honouring the institution’s rich history and the countless lives it has positively impacted over the past 150 years.
The school remains a beacon of education, instilling values and knowledge in generations of young women, setting the standard for excellence in girls’ education in the Free State and South Africa.
