The Free State has lost one of its most distinguished sons, as tributes poured in following the announcement that former Premier Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota passed away this morning. Born in Kroonstad in 1948, Lekota affectionately known as “Terror” for his skill on the soccer field remained deeply connected to his home province throughout his life.

The 77-year-old died in a Johannesburg hospital in the early hours of this morning.

Roy Jankielsohn, DA Free State Leader, expressed the party’s deepest condolences to Lekota’s family and friends, saying the province mourns a true stalwart.

Lekota was a committed anti-apartheid activist, serving two prison sentences, including time on Robben Island alongside Nelson Mandela. Following South Africa’s transition to democracy, he became the Free State’s first Premier, serving from 1994 to 1996.

He subsequently held prominent national positions, including chairperson of the National Council of Provinces from 1997 to 1999 and Minister of Defence between 1999 and 2008.  In 2008, Lekota made a historic political decision, refusing to serve under the African National Congress (ANC) led by Jacob Zuma. He formally left the ANC to establish the opposition party, Congress of the People, a move that reflected his steadfast commitment to principle over politics.

Described by many as a gentleman politician, Lekota will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to building a non-racial and inclusive constitutional democracy. His legacy of Ubuntu, demonstrated through political tolerance, consensus-building, and humility, continues to resonate across the Free State. The Democratic Alliance extended heartfelt condolences to Lekota’s family, friends, and all who admired his decades-long service to justice, equality, and nation-building.
