The serious consequences of committing crimes of sexual violence were once again highlighted when a 31-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for rape by the Frankfort Regional Court.
The traumatic incident occurred on 19 September last year when Fana Kelvin Mphuthi from Frankfort, who was in a relationship with the victim at the time, committed a grave violation of trust. During the evening, what began as a typical interaction between partners quickly escalated into a violent and criminal act.
According to court records, Mphuthi started assaulting and accusing his girlfriend of having been unfaithful to him, which she denied. Mphuthi however kept on threatening her. Eventually, the victim felt compelled to agree with his accusations to stop the assault, but instead of leaving her in peace, Mphuthi used the opportunity to rape the victim.
Following the traumatic experience, the victim reported the rape to local authorities. Detective Sgt Mamoferefere Maloka of the Mafube Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses unit thoroughly investigated the case, ultimately securing the conviction that resulted in a 12-year prison sentence for Mphuthi.
