Residents of Kroonstad are raising critical concerns about escalating illegal dumping and unauthorised informal shack construction along Truter Street, near the Lifestyle Centre in Kroonstad.

The community said the situation demands immediate municipal intervention to safeguard their health, safety, and environmental integrity.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has officially escalated the matter by submitting a letter to the Moqhaka municipality, calling for urgent and decisive action. Marelize Boeije, DA Councillor for Moqhaka municipality, said the growing environmental and social challenges facing the area include the following:

• Unmanaged waste disposal practices
• Improperly sorted and abandoned refuse
• Potential health risks
• Unauthorised settlement development

Residents have requested specific clarifications from the municipality regarding the current strategies addressing illegal dumping, existing waste management protocols, plans to prevent unauthorised structure construction, proposed clean-up timelines and long-term sustainable solutions.

Boeije said they demand comprehensive and transparent action to eliminate these above-mentioned risks and to restore neighbourhood aesthetics.
