Residents of Koppies have been left without water for four consecutive days, revealing a catastrophic breakdown in basic service delivery that threatens human dignity and community well-being.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ngwathe has taken decisive action, with Councillor Carina Serfontein formally addressing the crisis by writing to Municipal Manager F.P. Mothamaha.
Serfontein says that Koppies has been without water since Saturday, 19 July, and that this is more than a technical failure – it’s a fundamental violation of residents’ basic human rights.
The water crisis originated from critical pump failures at the main reservoir, exposing years of infrastructural negligence. What makes the situation more alarming is the complete absence of emergency response. No water trucks, no interim assistance, and no communication have left residents entirely abandoned.
Municipal Mayor Victoria de Beer has been directly challenged to develop a comprehensive action plan to prevent future occurrences. “These communities deserve reliable, consistent basic services that respect their fundamental human rights. Years of underinvestment, poor maintenance, and short-sighted planning have created a perfect storm of service delivery failure,” Serfontein said.
As the crisis continues, the people of Koppies remain resilient, demanding nothing more than their constitutional right to basic services. For ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to contact local DA representatives or municipal offices for assistance.
