Four suspects have been arrested near Ventersburg for stock theft.

On Friday, 6 June, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) apprehended four suspects linked to a significant stock theft incident in Ventersburg.

At approximately 03:00, police officers on patrol noticed a white bakkie driving at excessive speeds and exhibiting suspicious behavior.

After losing sight of the vehicle momentarily, police members managed to intercept the bakkie as it approached from the opposite direction.

Upon stopping the vehicle, the police found several portions of a cattle carcass that were concealed under the canopy in the rear of the bakkie, leading to further questioning of the driver.

In an initial attempt to deflect suspicion, the driver claimed he had been called to collect a load. With astute questioning, the police officers persuaded the driver to contact his accomplices, alleging that he had run out of fuel and needed their help.

When two individuals arrived with a petrol can, believing they were assisting their accomplice, they were promptly arrested.

Following up on leads, the police arrested a fourth suspect and located the scene of the animal slaughter, where several tools and items believed to have been used in the crime, were confiscated.

The operation culminated in the identification of the rightful owner of the stolen livestock – a farmer from the nearby Bloubank area.

The recovered meat, valued at an estimated R15 000, was returned to the owner.

The four suspects, ranging in ages between 27 and 36 years, will appear in the Ventersburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

The police asked that as the case unfolds, members of the community be vigilant and provide their cooperation with law enforcement in combating the ongoing scourge that is stock theft.
