MATJHABENG – The Free State government has renewed its commitment to addressing ongoing water and sanitation challenges in Matjhabeng following a stakeholder meeting and infrastructure site visit held in Welkom on Friday 10 July.

Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae was accompanied by the executive mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Thanduxolo Khalipha.

They met with representatives of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), Vaal Central Water, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and other key stakeholders to discuss measures aimed at improving service delivery across the municipality.

Discussions focused on strengthening the implementation of water and sanitation projects, improving contractor accountability, enhancing the operation and maintenance of infrastructure, and increasing cooperation between the various role players responsible for restoring essential services.

Following the meeting, the delegation conducted a site inspection at Constancia Road, where progress on infrastructure interventions was assessed.

Stakeholders also discussed additional measures to accelerate the completion of projects and improve the reliability of water and sanitation services for residents.

The meeting forms part of government’s ongoing efforts to address long-standing service delivery challenges in Matjhabeng, where residents have experienced recurring water supply interruptions, ageing infrastructure and sewerage problems.

According to the provincial government, the engagement reaffirmed its commitment to implementing sustainable solutions that will restore reliable water and sanitation services and improve the quality of life for communities across the municipality.
