THABONG – The African Liberation Movement (ALM) has called for an investigation into an abandoned sewage infrastructure project in Thabong, Welkom, which has left residents without adequate sanitation services.

The project, located at the T11/2 Dichokoleteng new stands, was awarded to Ke-Sedi Construction in 2018 under the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. The contractor was appointed to install sewage pipes, but the project was reportedly never completed.

According to the ALM, roughly R30 million was allocated to the project. Ntsane Thebe, ALM leader, said the organisation was concerned about the impact of the stalled project on residents.

“Residents deserve dignified sanitation services, and an abandoned project of this nature cannot simply be left unattended,” Thebe said.

Thebe said the organisation intends to request a meeting with the Matjhabeng Local Municipality to establish what happened to the project, how much money has been spent and what plans are in place to complete the work.

The ALM said it wants clarity on the status of the contract and whether any measures have been taken to ensure that the outstanding work is completed. The organisation has also appealed to communities to report other abandoned or stalled municipal projects to its representatives so that they can be raised with the relevant authorities.
