WELKOM — Two men aged 30 and 32 have been arrested in connection with a robbery allegedly committed in Thabong earlier this month.

The arrests were made by members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) on Sunday, 13 September, during crime-prevention duties.

Police trace wanted suspects

According to police, members received information about the whereabouts of one of the wanted suspects. The information was followed up, leading officers to an address in Thabong, where the 30-year-old suspect was found and arrested.

Further investigations led police to the second suspect in Oppenheimer Park, Thabong.

During the second arrest, officers recovered a laptop charger, backpack, hat and adapter plug, which had reportedly been stolen during the robbery. Police also seized two large knives believed to have been used during the commission of the crime.

The recovered items were positively identified by the complainant.

Third suspect still at large

The robbery allegedly took place on Saturday, 5 September, when the complainant was walking to his place of residence.

Police allege that he was accosted by three men, two of whom were wielding knives. The suspects allegedly attempted to stab him before robbing him of his belongings.

A case of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm was registered for further investigation.

The third alleged suspect has not yet been arrested.

The two arrested men are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon. Their identities and the charges they face will be formally addressed through the court process.
