Police have reported significant breakthroughs following a high-intensity policing initiative across the Free State. Under Operation Shanela, law enforcement arrested 1 356 suspects over the past week, specifically targeting illicit contraband, vehicle crimes, and illegal firearms.
The operations that were held from 16 to 22 March addressed drug-related crimes, unlicensed and illegal possession of firearms, possession of stolen goods, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, and the apprehension of illegal immigrants.
During the operation, 36 580 people were searched and 12 321 vehicles inspected at various vehicle control points and roadblocks. Additionally, 855 premises were searched during tracking and tracing operations.

The operation resulted in multiple arrests for drug dealing, illegal possession of ammunition, and robbery. Further drug-related arrests were made in Kroonstad, where dagga and crystal methamphetamine were confiscated.
A 47-year-old woman was arrested in Kroonstad on 22 March for possession of suspected stolen livestock after two sheep carcasses were found hidden in her house.
In the Amelia section of Zamdela an operation led to the arrest of a 47-year-old male for possession of suspected stolen property. Corrugated iron sheets and ceiling panels belonging to a school were discovered in his home. Traffic officials also issued 335 fines for traffic infringements. Of the 1 356 total arrests, 324 were made during crime detection operations.
Acting Free State Provincial Commissioner Maj. Genl Apaphia Modise stated that this integrated approach to policing is ongoing and inclusive. “A collaborative approach always carries the team to greater heights,” said Modise.
