Free State – Police arrested 1,979 people, including 377 wanted suspects, during Operation Shanela conducted across the Free State from 13 to 19 October.
The multidisciplinary integrated approach brought together the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF), metro police, traffic police, South African Revenue Service (SARS), Department of Home Affairs, Eskom, and Transnet, amongst other agencies, with the purpose of combating crime in communities.
The operation targeted serious crimes including murders, rapes, carjackings, house robberies, and house breakings.

Significant Arrests Made
The operation yielded positive results, with 99 people arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 14 for rape, and 11 for murder. Additionally, 403 suspects were found in possession of illegal cigarettes, 50 for possession of dangerous weapons, and 60 for drug possession, amongst other arrests.
Police also confiscated drugs, copper cables, and three firearms during the operation.
Forensic Investigation Underway
Firearms recovered during the operation will be sent to ballistics to determine whether they were used in the commission of other crimes.
“All arrested suspects will appear in different magistrates’ courts on various dates,” said Sergeant Sinah Mpakane, spokesperson for the Free State SAPS.
The operation demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts in addressing crime across the province, with multiple agencies working together to enhance community safety and security.
Operation Shanela represents part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle priority crimes and remove dangerous criminals from Free State communities.
