A joint operation by the SAPS, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and mine security services has led to multiple arrests and the seizure of firearms and illegal mining equipment in the Lejweleputswa District.
On 13 September, members followed up on information that led them to a residence in Meloding.
While searching the premises, the team discovered one revolver firearm with a serial number filed off. A male (63) was arrested and the firearm and ammunition were seized by police.
A foreign national (44) was arrested in Odendaalsrus for contravening the Immigration Act.

On 22 September, whilst conducting operational duties in Virginia, police confiscated possible gold-bearing material and equipment suspected to be used in illicit mining activities.
A foreign national (36) was arrested for possession of suspected gold-bearing material. Two other suspects were arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act.
Intelligence-driven information was operationalised in Virginia alongside the Tactical Response team on 23 September. A scrap yard manager (29) was arrested after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
On 24 September, three males aged between 18 and 36 were arrested at Welkom Bambanani East mine for trespassing and tampering with essential infrastructure.
The items seized during the operations were booked in as evidence.
The operations reflect the integrated efforts aimed at dismantling illegal activities, especially illegal mining networks.
