WELKOM – The fight against illegal mining intensified in Welkom after a joint operation by the South African National Defense Force (SANDF), South African Police Service (SAPS) and Immigration officials led to the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of equipment and material suspected to contain gold.

The operation was conducted on 27 August as part of efforts to identify undocumented persons and disrupt illegal mining activities in the area.

During searches, officials recovered several items believed to be used in illegal mining, including steel plates, shovels, a garden spade, a pickaxe and plastic buckets.

Approximately 44 kg of material suspected to contain gold was also recovered.

Several suspects were arrested during the operation and handed over to SAPS in Welkom, together with the confiscated items. They are expected to face the relevant legal processes as investigations continue.

The operation was conducted under Operation Prosper Free State, through which SANDF members support law-enforcement agencies in tackling illegal activities and strengthening safety across the province.

The latest operation highlights the importance of cooperation between the SANDF, SAPS and Immigration officials in disrupting illegal mining operations and addressing related criminal activity.

Authorities have continued to target illegal mining activities in the Free State, particularly in areas where abandoned or disused mine workings provide opportunities for unlawful mining.
